History

So ever wonder how this all came to be? Well, the following time line gives an outline of how Crag Crux Climbers went from one man's idea to what we are today.

  • 1996 Xiaoping Li (a.k.a. XP) created the Crag Crux Climbers group in Xtra’s Community Group Listing page. A small group of climbers met. Group events were held in climbing gyms. Members also climbed with each other outdoors.
  • 1999 Ken Allen (a.k.a. k1) created Crag Crux Climbers’ first website and a Yahoo Group Mailing List to facilitate sharing information and communication between group members.
  • 2001 Ken Allen became the main organiser of the group, assisted by Graeme Parry and Evan Apsit, after Xiaoping left climbing for water polo.
  • 2002 Monthly climb events were established.
  • 2006 Ken registered www.crag.ca domain and redeveloped the website.
  • 2006 Ken established the Beginners Nights rotating between three climbing gyms hosted respectively by Shawn Sheridan (a.k.a. shawn), Graeme (a.k.a. crimper), and Xiaoping who had returned to climbing.
  • 2008 Ken created Crag Crux Climbers Facebook group.
  • 2009 Ken retired from organising and passed on this role to Xiaoping. Xiaoping, Shawn Sheridan, Roger Near (a.k.a. RogerN) and Andrew Hlavats (a.k.a. andrew) formed a Working Group to determine direction for the group, form a mission statement, a vision, and an organisation structure to better support sustainability by splitting the responsibility of running the club amongst a number of roles. Shawn chaired and facilitated the process. Shawn developed the group’s new website to combine the functions of the previous website and the Yahoo group mailing list, plus added features to make www.crag.ca a site where the club members could easily contribute content as well. The Working Group's recommendation was placed on the new website for ratification by the membership.
  • 2010 Crag Crux Climbers simplifies its direction and structure, and continues to pursue climbing in an LGBT-friendly environment.

And that takes us to today. We'll continue to update this as the club moves forward. But that give you a bit of an idea of how we got here.
